Where Should I Hold My Next Team Building Event?
Team building is one of the most effective ways to increase morale. It gives people a mental break from work and builds connections so they feel more valued and engaged at work. Engaged workers are more productive, which increases the output and bottom line for the company. Studies show that companies with engaged employees earn as much as 2.5 times more income than competitors with low employee engagement. Engagement also keeps employees around—engaged employees are 87% less likely to leave a company.
Team building is about building stronger relationships with peers, ideally with some type of activity to build an ongoing collaboration. Team building can involve a wide range of activities that can benefit from the strengths of each other, allowing for better communication, for expression and suggestion of new ideas, and most importantly it makes problems easier to solve before they escalate.
Team building doesn’t have to be an all-day affair. Taking 20 minutes out of the first half of your next group meeting can be enough to spark innovation and teamwork. The most successful, memorable team building event is the one that doesn’t feel like a day at the office. Spending time together, sharing an experience, or working towards a common goal allows bonding to happen more organically and far more effectively.
Get Planning
First things first; chat with your HR department or event coordinator to hone in on the details, including location, venue space required, desired outcomes, and your company culture.
Location, location, location!
Your choice of venue will have some effect on the overall event experience for your team. fluidmeet can offer guidance on any hotel, event space or conference center you’re considering. To get you started, we’ve put together this list of places we already know that you will love. Get started by filtering your results by location using the fluidmeet platform.
Be mindful of the weather!
In Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, the weather is a determining factor for your team-building activity – that’s if you’re choosing to hold your teambuilding activity in an outdoor space. Try to check the weather ahead of time, and make sure you have a backup indoor event space in case it starts to get too humid. Also make sure that on a bright and sunny day out, everyone’s applying sunscreen! A sunburn is not one of the things you want people to take away from a fun team day out.
Play some tunes
Everything is more fun with music! Find some energetic music to liven up your event and get your team moving (“Eye of the Tiger” jumps to mind. You can simply run music from a laptop or an AV System in a banquet room if you decide to hold your teambuilding activity in a hotel venue. However, if your event is taking place in an outdoor event space, it might be in your best interest to find some speakers to plug a phone or mp3 player into.
Dress Down
Even if your teambuilding day only takes the afternoon off work, it will help if everyone who’s participating knows that they can dress for comfort, so you won’t have to worry about anyone getting hurt trying to run in high heels!
Most importantly – Have Fun!
This might seem obvious, but it’s important to remember the motivation behind a teambuilding day out. While the competition can be motivating and exciting, don’t let competitiveness take over to the point where people aren’t having fun. Keep the prizes relatively low-stakes, since higher value prizes, while nice for the winner, can cause a lot of resentment among colleagues. Make sure that everyone in the event is having fun, by being encouraging and trying to engage everyone in a fun way.
What kind of space is required?
An interactive team building activity can be held in any event space, banquet, or meeting room that can comfortably fit your group. A large meeting room or ballroom is recommended. Usually, around four tables will be required for each zone (let’s say that each zone has 40 participants). You would also require 1 rectangular table (6′ or 8′) with a chair. You may choose to line the event space with a chair for each participant, it is that simple in terms of space and layout. Additional needs depend on the number of participants. Keep in mind that the right venue space is usually designed to stimulate networking and increase employee engagement, making it perfect for icebreakers, corporate training, and even large conference venues.
Types of team-building activities
Icebreaker – for short introductory events, you can have some type of light-hearted games that are designed to get people familiarized, moving and meeting one another. It’s interactive
Corporate Training – for longer team building events, we can present a more competitive event with a selection of intriguing strategic games that get a group out of themselves and having fun in a whole new way. You can even get employees to play musical instruments, play the drums, or to play flutes. It can be as tailored as you want.
Conference Breakout Sessions – for breakout games as part of a larger group conference, you can present an interactive large group game where you train horses, race, and bet as you compete in teams to win.
While investing in team building, you’ll help drastically improve your engagement among your employees, develop trust, calm conflicts, reduce stress, boost morale, and facilitate better teamwork in the office. You’ll also see ten times returns in employee loyalty, innovation and work ethic.
In short, team-building activities are a win/win for everybody. Your team feels appreciated, they enjoy a refreshing experience outside of the workplace, they get more comfortable with each other, and their engagement levels rise – and this means that workplace efficiency, which will ultimately benefit your company’s bottom line.
